Women Drop Two Over Weekend

By Scott Lemon, Yellowstone Christian College SID

The Yellowstone Christian College Centurion women’s basketball team dropped a pair of games over the weekend, falling to the Northwest College Trappers 66-27 on Friday and 70-43 to the Gillette College Pronghorns on Saturday, with both games played on the campus of Gillette College in Gillette, Wyo.

Northwest 66, Centurions 27
The Centurions were overmatched from the opening tip on Friday, powering Northwest College to a 66-27 victory. Northwest quickly built a commanding lead, holding the Centurions to just 25% from the floor in the first half. The Trappers took a 20-point lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Trappers weren’t done yet. Their offense took off in the second half, putting up 35 points in the final two quarters of play while shooting 44% from the field. Northwest outscored the Centurions 32-18 in the paint.

Northwest saw a very balanced scoring attack on Friday night. Dallas Petties paced the offensive barrage with 11 points and eight rebounds. Charri McArthur chipped in with nine points, and Brazilian duo Domenica Gomes and Julynne Silva added 8 points apiece.

Every player reached the scoring column for the Centurions, but none were in double-digits. Tayler Calf Boss Ribs led the way with seven points, and Tiani Alvarez added five points and passed out three assists.

In two match-ups this season, Northwest has outscored YCC 160-84. The Centurions will get one more crack at the Trappers as they will host Northwest on Wednesday night in a double-header starting at 5:30 p.m. at The Shrine Auditorium.

Gillette 70, Centurions 43
Gillette College and the Centurions were evenly matched much of the night, but Gillette pulled away in the fourth quarter, earning the Pronghorns a 70-43 victory over YCC.

The Pronghorns never got out of striking distance in the first half, as the YCC women battled well. Gillette was able to take a 30-23 lead into the halftime break, but the Centurions were confident coming out for the second half.

However, Gillette had other ideas. The Pronghorns used their posts to steadily build their lead to put the game out of reach in the second half. Gillette outscored YCC 52-18 in the paint on Saturday. Freshman Julia Robarge did nearly all of her damage within 10 feet of the basket, leading all scorers with 25 points.

Robarge was joined in double-digit scoring by Shy’Tyra Powell, who added 10 points and seven rebounds for Gillette. Freshman Rickie Engesser was a pick-pocket specialist on Saturday, recording five steals.

Leonardine John and Tayler Calf Boss Ribs paced the Centurion offense with nine points each. John also picked up a game-high six assists. Posts Paige Gregory and Deandra Cunningham had eight points apiece. Freshman Tana Allen recorded four steals of her own.

The Centurions will not see Gillette again until late February, when the Pronghorns make the 230-mile trip to Billings. For more information about the season and for full game recaps, visit www.gocenturions.com.
