Centurion Women Win Fifth Straight Behind Alvarez's Career Game

By Scott Lemon, Yellowstone Christian SID

BILLINGS, Mont. — Tiani Alvarez poured in a career-best 15 points to lead the Yellowstone Christian College Centurions over the Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College Lady Storm 70-53 on Saturday afternoon in Billings.

After needing overtime for the Storm to top the Centurions the first time around in January, the Centurions rode their hot streak into Saturday’s game with a large bout of confidence. From the opening tip, the game went back and fourth through the first two quarters. Neither team led by more than five points in the first two quarters of play. The teams headed into the locker room at halftime tied at 32.

Tayler Brankovic led the charge for the Centurions as YCC slowly built their second half lead. Brankovic scored all of her 14 points in the last two quarters of play. Assisting in building that lead was the charity stripe. The Centurions went to the line 34 times during the game, connecting on 19 attempts.

Joining Alvarez and Brankovic in double-figures was Sharnell Thomas and Deandra Cunningham with 13 and 11 points respectively. Thomas also chalked up a game-high five assists.

The Lady Storm were paced by Jo Smith with 12 points and Darien Quick Bear with 11. Jessica Hale pulled down a game-high eight boards.

The Centurions will hit the road on Friday, traveling to Kyle, S.D., to take on Oglala Lakota College. YCC beat the Bravehearts twice last weekend when OLC visited Billings. Tip for Friday’s game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. For more information about the season and for complete game recaps, visit
