Buccaneers Battle Back for 80-69 Victory Over Centurion Women

By Scott Lemon, Yellowstone Christian College SID

BILLINGS, MT — After holding the lead much of the game, the Yellowstone Christian College Centurions saw their lead slip away as the Lady Buccaneers of Dawson Community College mounted a second half comeback, earning Dawson a 80-69 victory on Tuesday night.

Yellowstone Christian enjoyed the lead nearly the entire first half, taking an 11-point lead into halftime. However, Dawson began chipping away at that lead in the second half, outscoring the Centurions 31-14 in the third quarter, taking a 60-54 lead into the final quarter.

Physical fatigue began to plague the Centurions in the second half as turnovers began to mount. The Buccaneers used those turnovers to outscore YCC 20-15 in the final frame, earning a 80-69 victory.

The Centurions saw a very balanced scoring attack on Tuesday, with four players in double digits. Sharnell Thomas led the charge with 15 to go along with a game-high five assists. Billings native Paige Gregory scored 14 points, and Tayler Calf Boss Ribs had 10 points. Leonardine John just missed her first career double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Rachael Ault attempted 35 shots in the game, connecting on 15 of them, to pace the Bucs offense with 27 points. Ault completed the double-double with ten rebounds. Janae Strode also put up over 20 points with a 24-point night herself.

The Centurions have started the hardest portion of their schedule this season, as Tuesday marked their first of eight games in 12 days. Tuesday’s game was the only game in that stretch scheduled at home. The Centurions begin their rugged road trip on Thursday in Scottsbluff, Neb. as they take on the Lady Cougars of Western Nebraska Community College.
