Cold Shooting Dooms Centurions in 92-41 Loss to Cougars

By Scott Lemon, Yellowstone Christian College SID

SCOTTSBLUFF, NE — The Yellowstone Christian College Centurions survived an 8 1/2 hour bus ride despite treacherous road conditions, but couldn't find their shooting touch once they got on the floor against the Western Nebraska Community College Cougars, shooting a dismal 21% from the floor and 15% from three-point range in a 92-41 loss on Thursday night in a cold and blustery Scottsbluff, Neb.

The Cougars were the superior team from the opening tip, consistently pounding the ball into the paint and using their height advantage to outscore and out-rebound YCC. The Cougars won the rebounding battle 59-35. The Centurions didn’t help their cause any, converting on only 11 of 52 shot attempts from the floor and a mere 3 of 15 from three-point land.

Sharnell Thomas led the offense with 15 points. She only connected on two shots, but made 10 of 11 free throws. Leonardine John joined her in double figures with ten points, all of which came in the first half.

The Cougars saw four players in double-digits. Sladjana Rakovic led the way with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. Bree Paulson scored 16 points, and Anastacia Johnson and Zeynep Canbaz chipped in with 12 apiece.

The Centurions continue their weekend road trip on Friday as they head to Torrington, Wyo. to face Eastern Wyoming on Friday night and North Platte on Saturday afternoon. For more information about the season and for full game recaps, visit
