By Scott Lemon, Yellowstone Christian SID

PABLO, Mont. — In the final two games of the season, the Yellowstone Christian College Centurions tasted both victory and defeat, splitting a two-game series with the Salish Kootenai College Lady Bison. The Centurions lost 75-67 on Sunday night and won 63-59 on Monday night.

SKC 75, YCC 67
During Sunday’s matchup, the Lady Bison caught fire from the field, shooting an incredible 67% (28-of-42) for the game. Their shooting from three-point-land was equally as impressive, connecting on 61% (11-of-18) of their attempts.

Whitney Malatare led the three-point barrage for the Lady Bison, cashing in on 4-of-5 attempts. Kaylea Skunkcap matched Malatare’s performance, shooting 4-of-5 from downtown as well. On the flip side, the Centurions only attempted four three-point attempts all game, all of which were shot by Tayler Brankovic. Brankovic made just one of those attempts.

Paige Gregory continued her sound play, pouring in 18 points and pulling down four rebounds. She also added a steal, an assist, and a block to chalk up a mark in every category for the Centurions. Sharnell Thomas nearly matched Gregory’s performance, scoring 17 points and pulling down four rebounds. Brankovic chalked up 11 points, but also picked up six assists and six steals, both of which led the squad.

Malatare led all scorers with 22 points. She was joined in double digits by Kaylea Skunkcap with 14 points and Shanelle Skunkcap with 13 points.

The Centurions were able to avenge their loss on Sunday, picking up a victory on Monday night and winning the season series 3-1 against SKC 3-1.

The Centurions shot the ball much better on Monday, connecting on 45% (23-of-51) of their attempts from the field. Paige Gregory scored in double figures for her fifth straight game, pacing the Centurion offense with 18 points. Gregory just missed her third double-double of the year as she also pulled down nine rebounds and rounded out her game with four steals. The balanced Centurion attack was aided by Sharnell Thomas with 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists, and Tayler Brankovic with 13 points and six rebounds. Tiani Alvarez dished out a game-high eight assists and Deandra Cunningham blocked two shots.

Whitney Malatare had herself another great game on Monday, dropping 20 points and pulling down three rebounds. However, the rest of the offense didn't have much to show for it. Mahalia Hendren scored 11 points and grabbed four boards and Shanelle Skunkcap chalked up ten points of her own.

The Centurions close out the 2016-2017 season with an 11-14 record, winning ten of their final 12 ballgames. A full season recap will be available on www.gocenturions.com at the end of the week.
